The EntreMD Podcast
Talent is Overrated
Show Notes Transcript

On this episode of the EntreMD Podcast, I’ll discuss why talent is overrated.

I’ve studied successful entrepreneurs and the common theme I find is not talent. It is hard work.

I’ll show to you examples which prove that whether or not you have talent, it’s your work ethic that makes the difference. With hard work, you will scale your business and be the best entrepreneur you can be.

Dr. Una is such an inspiration. She is so relatable. She gives actionable advice on how to be a successful physician entrepreneur. Love this podcast, exclamation mark. All right, thank you, thank you so much for that very kind review. I appreciate it. And I am committed to bringing you new episodes every week, that will inspire you to be a very successful physician entrepreneur. And as it happens, please share your story. I'd love to hear it. I love celebrating every kind of success.

Alright, so today, we're going to be looking at something really important. And it's this talent is overrated. There are some times when we feel I can't start that business, because I'm not as smart as that entrepreneur, well Ican't create that product? Because I don't think my products will be as amazing as somebody else's product. Or I'm not gonna do that talk. Because what do I have to say? That's all related to talent, like, I'm not as talented as they are. I'm not as gifted as they are. And I just wanted to spend this whole episode to let you know that talent is overrated. And talent is not the prerequisite for success. It really isn't hard work is. Now we think about a lot of people were like, Oh my gosh, they're so talented. Like, you can look at a basketball player like Michael Jordan, you're like, he's so talented. You can look at some entrepreneurs like Elon Musk, or Jeff Bezos, and you're like this so talented. They're so gifted, they’re just brilliant entrepreneurs. And I've studied successful entrepreneurs. And the common theme I find is not talent is hard work. So I picked out a number of examples that I want to share with you today. And what it will do is it'll set you free, because it doesn't matter that you're not as talented or not as gifted. In your mind, maybe because maybe you are you know, we sometimes don't appreciate our own talent, but it doesn't matter. It's not a prerequisite. It just isn't. Alright, so, first one is, you guys all heard of Coachella, right? This amazing show happens in California. And Beyonce did a mind boggling performance in 2018. Mind boggling, I mean, Netflix did a whole documentary about it. And if you look at the statistics she had, for her performance, she had 458,000 people watching simultaneously, like almost half a million simultaneously. That's the most viewed live stream that Coachella has ever produced, most viewed. And I'm not a hip hop per se, I don't really watch music videos it is just not my thing. But I watched the documentary. And they had as many as 110 people on stage at the same time in perfect harmony, perfect sync. It was a brilliant production. Okay, extraordinary choreography, extraordinary vocals. So the question becomes, was that talent? And the answer is no, like, absolutely not. It wasn't. And, you know, I'd like you to guess so maybe you post it in the EntreMD Facebook Group, like, how long do you think they prepared for that two hour performance? What do you think? Right? I'm gonna tell you, but you think about it. What do you think? posted in the group? Okay. Now, for that two hour performance. Beyonce and her team rehearsed for eight months, eight, eight months, eight months for a two hour performance. So talent, no hard work. Yes, for eight months, and she started preparing six months after she had twins for eight months for two hour performance. Some days as they got closer to the event, they rehearsed for as long as 11 hours a day. Let's stop and think about that. So, yes, she's brilliant at what she does. But is she brilliant because she's talented? No, she's not. So if you think, Oh, I'm not as talented as somebody else, you may not have control over that you're born with what you're born with. What do you have control over whether you work hard or not? Yeah. So I may not have the talent. But I have the work ethic. Okay. All right. So one of my favorite basketball players of all time, the late Kobe Bryant, brilliant. I mean, one of the best ever, right black men, but one of the best ever. And in his heyday, he was so good. So good, that my husband and I would joke like, if you're playing the Lakers, and the buzzer has gone off, you still can't celebrate that you've won. Until you look and make sure there's no ball in the air. Right? Because he had so many so many buzzer beaters, I made that word up. But you know, he has so many of those. He was brilliant. His execution was impeccable. And we would say things like he's so talented. But is that really talent? Or is that hard work? Okay, so he has a reputation of working. Even in the dark, like two hours before practice. In the dark. You can hear the ball and who has it Kobe. In fact, one of his coaches said he watched him play from 4:15am to 11am. That's almost seven hours. And he was not going to get off the court until he did 800 shots. 800 shots, 800. 800 shots. He wasn't going to get off. And to give you an idea. He had an offseason workout routine. That was called the 666. Okay, weird number to pick. But you know, I digress. And what he would do is every day he do two hours of running two hours of basketball, two hours of weights. So that's working out for six hours. Okay. So six hours a day, six days a week for six months. This is offseason. This is when he's not actively playing games. So was it his talent that made him? No, it was his work ethic. It was his work ethic. Now, something really cool happened. About two weeks before the time of this recording. One of my mentors is Teresa Malfoy. And she was hosting a conference, it was her 10th anniversary conference. And she's like, I would love for you to come share your story. And you know, they're like, you know, you have three minutes to share your story. And this was in an event with over 1000 women in it. Okay. And three minutes was not scary. Right? How do you share your story in three minutes? It wasn't scary. But you know why? Because I've been trained to do a full talk in 90 seconds. I've been trained to do a full talk in 60 seconds. I have spent years and hours and hours and hours honing that skill of telling a story in that time of telling a story and taking all the fluff out of the story. So you can give a really powerful talk, really powerful story in 60 seconds. I have done it on videos. I've done it on Facebook Lives. I've done it on podcasts. I've consistently recorded a podcast every single week, for 10 months. I've spoken at other people's conferences, I've hosted my conferences, and because of the work at speaking, when an opportunity like that showed up, which was I mean, that was an amazing opportunity. I wasn't scared, I wasn’t nervous. And I knew I was going to execute. Now somebody in the audience could have said How could she have done that in three minutes? How could she? She's talented. She's a gifted speaker, a gifted speaker. I mean, I was a no speaker till I started training. No speaker at all. And super introverted. Introverted introvert, socially awkward, introverted introvert, but it's the work and the hours and the reps right? That's what they will say in sports and the reps and going on and on. And sucking at it was still going in doing a sloppy job. Not sloppy, but the best that I could at the time, but not really great. And doing the reps and keep going and keep going and keep going.

And then it gets better and better and better, until the time when you can stand in front of 1000 people and have no nerves. And know what you can execute in three minutes. It’s hard work people. It has nothing to do with talent. So maybe you're here. And the reason why you haven't started that business, you haven't scaled that business, you haven't started that YouTube channel, you haven't started that podcast, is because you feel you're not as gifted as somebody else or not as talented. You're free today, to do what you need to do. Because talent is not a prerequisite. Hard work is hard work. And if you're willing to do the work, you can have the result. Okay? So no talent, no problem. Alright. So what I want you to do today is, I want you to make a quality decision that I'm going to work hard, and I'm going to build the business of my dreams, I'm going to work hard, and I'm going to start it, I'm going to work hard, I'm going to scale it, I'm going to work hard, I'm going to become the best version of myself, maybe I'm not good at speaking not good at marketing, not good at selling not good at doing videos. Well, I can become good at it. If I'm willing to do the hard work, I want you to make the decision. I am going to do the hard work. I'm going to do the work it takes to be the best version of myself. I'm not hanging to no talent, no gift. I'm not hanging on to any of those as excuses anymore. Okay, that's all I want you to do. All right, go be great. Talent is not required. Alright, so thank you so much for coming to listen. And I want you to imagine that 90 days from now you will look back and you look at all the strides you've made. Because you're like, I have the work ethic. I can do this. Alright. And as you do that, let me know I'd love to celebrate you celebrate the docs is what I do. And this conversation doesn't have to end here. If you love this, come join us in the Facebook Group. Come share your aha moments what you got from the podcast the commitments you're making.
